2006, Artist Mia LaBerge (pic)
received a commission to create a Steinway Art Case
Piano –a rare honor. Only a few Art
Cases are made. The best known is the one in the White House,
while others are in top-rank hotels, luxury liners, and in select private
collections. LaBerge’s Art Case
celebrates the hundredth anniversary of James Madison University and also
recognizes its recent status as Virginia’s first All-Steinway Music
School. It is an art-historical
First: the first-ever Steinway
Art Case commemorating a university.
It might well also be the first use of bluestone inlay on a
piano. LaBerge’s painting shows the
bluestone-clad historic buildings of JMU’s old Quad and also shows the
then-unbuilt JMU Performing Arts Center.
Real bluestone caps the leg-columns.
In a national tour, the “Madison Bluestone” Steinway Art Case Piano
was ceremonially unveiled on stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington
DC. It was featured in a gala under
the dome of Steinway Hall in New York City.
It is scheduled to appear at Steinway dealers’ conventions in Los
Angeles and Salt Lake City. In 2008
or 2009 it will be auctioned as a JMU fundraiser. Credible early auction estimates are in the six-figure
range. Steinway
has also put the Artist on standby to create (on an as-ordered basis) 100
collector JMU Centennial Limited Edition pianos commemorating JMU’s 100
years. These will be quality
standard-issue Steinways, but with applied JMU seals and also with special
music desks hand-painted by Laberge.
A portion of every JMU Centennial Limited Edition Steinway purchase
will benefit JMU's Capital Campaign.
